The Good Ole South – Hunter’s General Store

Posted by OurVolvo.com on Jun 12, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

Been doing a lot of traveling lately and it’s always a real treat to travel down South and go through the historic part of the town.  Seeing the buildings that have been around for hundreds of years reminds me of the way it used to be.  I know I’m just a foreigner, but I am a Southerner at heart.  I remember when gas in South Carolina used to be 55 cents a gallon and when the stations were American owned and family operated.

Check out other historic sites in Pendleton, South Carolina area at: www.pendletondistrict.org

This 1850 general store serves as the headquarters for the Pendleton District Commission, a regional tourism promotion and historical services organization for Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties. The building is currently undergoing restoration, but may be opened by appointment for groups. Mailing address is 125 E. Queen Street, P.O. Box 565, Pendleton, SC 29670. The Pendleton District Commission is open M-F 9am-4:30 pm. Closed holidays.

Eni Meeny Miny Mo – Window Tinting on the Go

Posted by OurVolvo.com on Jun 1, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

With always being on the Go, and having my backside stuffed with luggage it has been awkward when people can see in and look at my junk in the trunk. So I’m in a predicament. Who should I chose to tint my ride?

1. Myself
2. Glass Act (with great reviews)
3. Ronnie’s Window Tinting

Well I was thinking for about $50 buck I could order some window tinting off eBay and I could do the job myself. Then I thought to myself, “self, what do I know about window tinting?” I would probably leave a whole bunch of bubbles in the tint and I would in the end have to go pay somebody to do it anyways and be out those $50 bucks.

Then after getting my step-brother’s Auto Glass Honda CRX 1989 Glass repaired at D-H Top-Auto Glass on Jones Street in Cleveland TN we met the owner and son of Glass Act also on Jones Street right next door. He stands behind all of his work with a life-time guarantee. He gave us a quote of $150 for as dark as we wanted the back of the Volvo Wagon and including the Limo Tint if we wanted.

So I just wanted to check around on the price and got a quote from Ronnie’s Window Tinting on 3rd Street in Cleveland TN. They gave me a quote of $135 but that I would have to pay $50 extra for the Limo Tint. I then told them I found a coupon online and when presenting it to them they said that this was not there coupon even though it was their business name and address. Hum. Interesting.

So who do I choose …. ? Any suggestions. If you read this post and want to give me a better deal I will give you my bussiness. Thanks.

AVOID Cabinsforyou.com REVIEW

Posted by OurVolvo.com on May 25, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

BEWARE: AVOID cabinsforyou.com AT ALL COST

Cabinsforyou.com is a cabin managing company with 11 employees, who does not own, but just manage the cabins they resell to third party users and visitors.

Address: 436 East Pkwy, Gatlinburg, TN 37738 | Tel.: (800) 684-7865 | www.cabinsforyou.com
Primary Contact: Ms. Debbie Plimpton (President) | Ms. Jessica Dewberry (Secretary/Treasurer)

We chose Cabinsforyou.com because they were a family-owned American company. Doing business with them, however, had nothing to do with being family or American. BEWARE!

After checking availability with the desired cabin over the phone, we booked it online because of the lower rate. Then, the day before our arrival, past office hours, we received a sudden phone call notifying us that the cabin we reserved for our 10 year anniversary had an issue which could not be fixed in the next 24-hours. No specific reason was given and when we asked directly, the answer was “I cannot honestly tell you!” With “not knowing” what the issue was, they still assured us they could not fix it before our stay. I even suggested we arrive a day latter and give 48-hours for the problem to be fixed because we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary with them. Without given any reason, we were told again this would not work.

In all seriousness, we were given the option to “upgrade,” but what was offered did not come even close to the accommodations of the reserved by us cabin: mountain view and privacy. The first upgrade had several other cabins in a very close proximity and the second one had a view of parking lots in Gatlinburg, which you can get at any downtown hotel for a much lesser price. This particular “upgrade” had four bedrooms, but we were told we could only use one of them.

Finally, we asked to speak to a manager and had to wait for over 3hrs. Then, someone called us at 8:46 PM some 10 minutes AFTER Cabinsforyou.com had sent as a cancellation email. Latter, we come to find out the person who called was not even a manager.

Doing business this way was, the least to say, very distasteful, especially with customers who have already reserved and secured with payment the service. Luckily for us, by that time we had decided leave it alone and simply asked for a refund. But after all, even the refund was uncertain and we were told they would have to get approval for it as well and will take 7-10 business days.

We latter found out via the Cabinsforyour.com’s online reservation calendar that there were already people in this particular cabin and it appeared that in order to save money on a cleaning fee, the management let the current renters extend their stay. There is simply no way to do business with people who treat you that way. We would avoid them at all cost in the future and seems like we are not alone with so many other dissatisfied customers out there. After looking for some reviews, which we should have done first, we found that Cabinsforyou.com is in the business of mistreating its customers as follows:

Teresa HarrellCreek Side Cabin via Cabinsforyou.com in Gatlinburg, TN. Bad cabin and company. The Creekside cabin was maintained in an unclean and unsafe condition.

Stacy Childers said “Save your money. Stay somewhere else.”

J.B. Scombs wrote about the skinny dippin cabin: “A dirty smelly cabin, hot tub smelled bad, used Kleenex under bed. They would not refund money”

Amanda G: “The place could use a good cleaning, there was dust on all the decorations in the kitchen, and black dust about the stove. There was also dust bunnies in all the corners of the floor and ceiling. The porch with the hot tub was dirty and I wonder if the thing had ever been swept. On our last night there while taking a shower I spotted a small cockroach on the ceiling in the bathroom. I only saw the one but with all the dark corners I can only imagine there were more lurking around.”

Pam: Disappointed. We stayed at Skinny Dipping cabin in Aug. 2010. The carpet and rugs were extremely dirty. The cabin did not seem to be clean at all and the spa turned my hair green. We rented 5 cabins in the same area for a wedding and 3 of us were not happy with our cabin. I will not use this company again.

Amanda: “Worst stay ever at Gatlinburg…I have never experienced such horrible customer service in my life.”

Skinny Dippin: I will not stay with Cabins USA again. Cabinets needed a good cleaning …deck had loose boards and nails sticking out with several railing boards missing on the lower deck …

The K.A.G.E. at Guild, TN

Posted by OurVolvo.com on May 15, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

We found the K.A.G.E. at Guild, TN while visiting with the nice folks at the Hale’s Bar Marina. I hate to tell you, but you have not had biscuits and gravy until you have tried theirs. Best home cooked meals made by folks who know something about cooking. I can tell you this ‘cause I am someone who knows something about eating. Check it out for your self!

Getting Work on My Backside Today

Posted by OurVolvo.com on Apr 30, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

So, been thinking that I needed a bit more junk in the trunk if you know what I mean :).  So I went ahead and did it.  Got third row seats.  I know for some I’m a bit old being a 1999, but you are never too old in my opinion.  It did however take a bit of nip and tuck with one cutting.  In order to fully install third row seats in a Volvo without them you have to cut a small slat in the back of the 2nd row seats so that the back of the third row seat stands upright.  This picture and post from matthewsvolvosite.com really helped.

Fishing at Hales Bar Marina

Posted by OurVolvo.com on Apr 20, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

For my 88,000th mile stone I took some time fishing at Hales Bar Marina in Guild, TN. Nice place, indeed. The Marina has some floating cabins, which may not be a 5 star hotel, but are quite comfortable for a real cabin experience.

Nice folks take care of the marina. They even gave me a free night.  It was on Friday the 13th and the place is said to be haunted, but all was quiet that night. THEY ALSO GIVE GHOST TOURS OF DAM if interested and it has been featured on Ghost Adventures

Caught some crappies, perch and bass, but missed on the big catfish which broke 3 of my hooks on 20 pound line while eating breakfast. The owner recently caught a 80 pound catfish (pictures to prove it). They have great places to eat too, if you end up not catching anything at all. I’d recommend the K.A.G.E. with the best biscuits and gravy on this side of the mountain.  BTW just over the bridge is a different time zone :).

No More Volvo V70 for U.S. Market

Posted by OurVolvo.com on Apr 11, 2012 in 1999 Volvo V70

Volvo will drop its V70 wagon from the U.S. lineup for the 2011 model year. The V70 will continue to be sold in Europe. Only 1,800 V70s were sold in the U.S. last year.

DETROIT — Volvo has confirmed for Inside Line that its V70 station wagon is going away in the U.S. for the 2011 model year. “We sold only 1,800 V70s last year,” said Volvo Cars of North America spokesman Dan Johnston in response to an e-mailed query on Friday. “Kind of hard to make a living on that few units. “Our XC70, XC60 and XC90s account for about 42 percent of total sales, while V70 is only about 2 percent. Buyers voted with their pocketbooks and chose an XC over [the] V70 in our market.”

Johnston said the V70 will continue to be sold in other Volvo markets such as Europe. The news of the V70’s demise in North America was greeted by the European automotive media with such comments as “Americans Hate Wagons.” Johnston noted that later this year, Volvo will bring out an XC70 front-wheel-drive model. But he said pricing on that is unavailable at this time.
